Sikinos Island is part of the Cyclades Island Group, Greece.
To reach Sikinos, it is generally necessary to change ferries at Ios or Santorini. Direct connections to Athens are only twice weekly with G.A. Ferries (from Piraeus), and once a week with NEL Lines (from Lavrion). Throughout the summer, however, there are connections by regular ferry (SAOS Lines) to Ios and Santorini five times weekly.
The most comfortable hotel on Sikinos—the Hotel Porto Sikinos—with pleasantly appointed rooms, is in the port of Aloprónia (T. 22860 51220, fax 51247, www.portosikinos. gr). In the chora, simpler, family-run furnished rooms with marvellous sunset views can be found at the ‘Iliovasilema’ (T./fax 22860 51173, www. sikinos-sunset.gr): attached to it, is a good patisserie (for Greek sweets principally) run by the same family.
Klimatari, just north of the main church of Kastro, has simple Greek fare, some local cheese at certain periods, and delicious * Sikiniot wine. The fresh wine can be cloudy and, like the best island wines, tastes slightly salty. It alone merits the journey to Sikinos.
