The island is traversed from north to south by a 24km, metalled road that runs from Gialos to Panormiis. Most sites and points of interest can be explored by small diversions or walks off this main axis. Some of the coastal sites of the island are more easily reached by local boats from the harbour, however; this is indicated in the text where relevant. The route crosses the high plateau of the interior and gives a good sense of the variety of the island’s terrain.
